Healthy People - Risk Evaluation & Health Screening

The first phase of the HEALTHY PEOPLE employee wellness program consists of a computerized risk evaluation and a personal health screening offered to all employees on a voluntary basis at their work location.

RISK EVALUATION

The risk evaluation consists of a self-administered questionnaire designed to quantify the risk of employee morbidity and mortality based on his/her lifestyle habits. The risk evaluation is an educational tool aimed at increasing an individual's motivation for health behavior change. It provides participants with the opportunity to become involved in his/her own health care.

The questionnaire is delivered to the employee at the work location to be completed prior to the scheduled health screening.

HEALTH SCREENING

A screening scheduler is designated at each work location to distribute materials and schedule individual health screening appointments for employees. Risk evaluations are collected by HEALTHY PEOPLE personnel at the time of the employee's screening. All data is confidential.

The screening is conducted by qualified HEALTHY PEOPLE personnel. It consists of a blood pressure measurement, pulse rate, total blood cholesterol level, height and weight measurement, and the calculation of body composition (percent body fat). This data is added to the risk evaluation questionnaire to complete the personal wellness profile.

PERSONAL REPORT

The data collected is then analyzed by computer and an individual report is printed for each participant. The report is designed to increase health risk awareness and stimulate behavior change by clearly identifying personal risk factors and identifying strategies to reduce them. Educational literature on developing a personal wellness program, increasing heart health, and developing a personal fitness plan is included with each report. Completed reports are returned in a confidential enclosure to the employee at the work location.

SUMMARY MEETING

A summary of the report is conducted at each work location by HEALTHY PEOPLE personnel during a regularly scheduled staff meeting some time after the reports have been received by the employees. The purpose of this meeting is to clarify the meaning of results, answer employee questions and concerns, review the educational material, and hold a drawing for a gift certificate among participants.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY REPORT

At the completion of the risk evaluation and health screening in each district, an overall analysis of the health findings is provided in the Executive Summary Report. The grouped data that is presented in this report offers an analysis of district health needs and risks within the district without compromising individual anonymity. Recommendations for initiating risk reduction and health promotion activities are also provided in this report. This information is very useful in planning for a comprehensive employee wellness program in each district to address high risk behaviors.

INCENTIVES

Several incentives are provided to stimulate participation in the risk evaluation and health screening as well as the intervention programs:

  • All participants at each work location are entered into a drawing for a gift certificate.
  • The work location within a district that receives the highest percent of participation will receive a prize. All work locations that achieve 90% or better automatically qualify for this prize.
  • Bonus Bucks, water bottles, T-shirts, ink pens, and other prizes are given as rewards to employees participating in the intervention programs.
